Mildura - Langtree Hall - Victoria - You Travel Australia

The Langtree Hall Museum is Mildura's first public hall built in 1889. An important link in Mildura's Heritage.

When first built last century, the Hall was located in Langtree Avenue, next to a bake house. The first use for the hall was as an assembly hall for roller-skating and it quickly became the centre's first Public Hall.

By the year 1889 it was put to use for a variety of purposes including the holding of cases in the Court of Petty Sessions. In those days, Police personnel came from Yelta until the Mildura Courthouse was built in 1892.

It was also used for musical nights for dances and concerts, Church Services and a newspaper printing office. In 1936 the hall changed into a Billiards Room.

In the hall and cottage visitors will now find a fascinating range of history, from the vast collection by the Cornell's of almost 1300 international dolls to items of interest such as christening gowns, gramophones, restored furniture and photo album going way back in time.

Langtree Hall Museum displays local history and International Dolls. Come and reminisce about the past, or come and discover it!! There is something for all ages at the Langtree Hall Museum.

There is wheelchair access through Restored Cottage and Hall, for more details please contact Langtree Hall Museum.

Cabins (22 Mabel St)

Like our cottages, our cabins are also self-contained. With a kitchen, laundry, deck and shared barbeque, they’re smaller (1 or 2 bedrooms) but still provide ample privacy and great facilities for a short or long stay.

Motel units (79 Emma St)

Our motel units are great for short stays on business trips where you don’t have time to do all your cooking and cleaning. They don’t have a kitchenette or laundry, but they do have a microwave and fridge. They also have disabled access.

Historic Wentworth

Historic Wentworth

Explorer Captain Charles Sturt arrived in the area in the 1830s in the search for an inland sea. He entered the headwaters of a wide river, which he named the Darling. On a subsequent expedition he entered a mighty river, which he named the Murray. In 1830, while navigating the Murray, he came across a river junction, which he was convinced was the confluence with the Darling.
Settlers and drovers began arriving in the area, bringing cattle and sheep to graze the natural pastures. The river junction spot became an established campsite known as Hawdon's Ford. The actual junction at the time was called "The Rinty". The settlement was later referred to as the "Darling Junction".
In the mid 1840s the settlement was known as "McLeod's Crossing", named for the first white residents of the settlement.
With the arrival of paddleboats in 1853, the small settlement of Wentworth found itself ideally situated as an administrative and commercial centre for the untapped wealth of the vast outback. For many years Sydney was the only port in New South Wales to handle more cargo than Wentworth.
In 1857, Surveyor General Barney considered it time to establish a proper township. The town site was approved in 1859 and was named after the New South Wales explorer and politician William Charles Wentworth. The area was proclaimed a municipality on January 23, 1879, and is the region's oldest settlement.

Wentworth Gaol

Old Wentworth Gaol

Built between 1879 and 1881, The Old Wentworth Gaol is the first Australia-designed gaol. Visit the gaol and explore the warden's residence, see the austere male and female cells, exercise yards, the gaol workshop, kitchen and gaoler's residence, the tree where prisoners were shackled, the well and the hospital.
The layout for the single storey brick gaol was used as a template for gaols built in Hay and Dubbo, and Sydney's Long Bay Gaol copied the design used for the cells. The new gaol replaced over-crowded lock ups and was used until 1927.
The National Trust-classified gaol was used briefly as extra classrooms before becoming a local tourist attraction.

Building a gaol

Wentworth Gaol as it now stands was constructed because the local townspeople and clergy were concerned that the original two-celled lock-up was inadequate. It was also thought that Wentworth's location on two rivers made it an obvious choice as an administrative centre and so a larger institution was needed.
The gaol was designed by colonial architect James Barnett, who also designed the Wentworth Courthouse and Sydney's Customs House and GPO.
The bricks were made by hand from local clay by Joseph Fritz and the stone used to build the gaol came from Malmsbury, Victoria, and transported to Wentworth by train and bullock wagon. The slate for the roof was shipped from Wales.
